TACTICAL and Windows FE, How to get started..
Apr 13, 2011
Ok, now for the quick follow-up to yesterday's post. Here's the instructions for getting Windows FE on your TACTICAL Subject device.
Follow the instructions listed at (These instructions work with version 2.1 and version 3.0 of the Windows AIK):
http://media.caballe.cat/2010/04/Research-Windows%20FE.rv3.doc
for creating a WinFE boot disk with these additions:
1) Back up your Tactical Subject dongle using the F-Response Tactical Manager.
2) Begin creating the WinFE OS using the instructions from the url above.
3) In step 2, delete the F:\winFE_x86\ISO\boot\bootfix.bin file (if it exists) – this will remove the “press any key to boot from CD” message, and the disk will no longer have the option to bypass and boot to the local OS.
4) Edit the “startnet.cmd” file in the \mount\windows\system32 folder to contain a new line with “c:\tactical subject\f-response-tacsub.exe” (include the quotation marks).
5) Proceed with the rest of the instructions from the original document up to creation of the ISO file as this is not necessary for making a bootable USB drive.
6) Insert the USB key into the machine that you are creating WinFE on and run the following command to copy the contents to the USB Key: “xcopy F:\winfe_x86\ISO\*.* /s /e /f /h G:\” (change F: to reflect the drive your files are on and G: to be the letter assigned to your USB key).
7) Restore the latest version of F-Response and the license files (if necessary) to the Tactical Subject dongle using the F-Response Tactical Manager.
As promised that should get you started, if you have questions please let us know.
Thanks, good luck and enjoy!
