Extending F-Response over the Internet
Oct 28, 2010
One of the best parts of being both a professional services firm and a software firm is that we are able to drive many software innovations and techniques from within the company. Recently one of our techniques for extending our virtual forensic presence was instrumental in allowing us to take on and deliver a very targeted project in a foreign county. I wanted to take the time to share that technique with you today.
Essentially we recognize the making F-Response connections across the Internet is challenging, not only are their firewalls and routers to contend with, but often bandwidth is insufficient at numerous points along the network path that responsive direct connectivity is just not possible.
In response to this problem we developed a simple process dependent on a little known product, 'USB-Over-Ethernet" provided by KernelPro (www.usb-over-ethernet.com). Simply put we use USB-Over-Ethernet to forward our F-Response dongle (and others) to a remote machine that we then connect to via Remote Desktop. Once on that machine we can essentially perform activities as if we are local to that remote network.
USB-Over-Ethernet is a very easy to use product and works exceptionally well at providing access to your USB dongle(s) over great distances. By design it does not allow for a USB device to be used simultaneously which stays inline with the licensing model of F-Response as well as other vendors.
We recommend that you take the time to take a look at USB-Over-Ethernet and how you can use it to extend your "virtual presence" anywhere in the world.
Enjoy!
Warmest Regards,
